Why do we need an arborist? Trees are extremely important to the environment. They take in carbon dioxide, producing oxygen that is essential to human survival and flourishing. An acre of forest takes in over six tons of carbon dioxide and produces four tons of oxygen (according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture). This is enough to supply 18 people with their necessary oxygen intake for a year. In addition to the air quality benefits trees provide, they supply a source of shelter and an aesthetic appeal that can be enjoyed by most everybody. Because of all of this, it is important to ensure that we keep our trees healthy and well-nourished. An arborist is the expert at doing just that.

How to Make a Tree Healthy Again

The beauty of trees is the face that they can fight for themselves. They often require little or no care, so you don’t have to do much to help it grow and stay healthy. However, humans can damage trees very easily.

  • There are some preventative measures that a person can take to ensure that no harm is made to trees:
Dig with caution -Construction and other projects that require digging can intrude the root system of a tree, potentially killing it. It is important to remember that a tree’s roots can extend over three times the distance as the branches. Therefore, if you’re about to begin a project, talk with an arborist to know exactly where you can and cannot build.
  • Water and fertilize with care – Over watering and over fertilizing large trees cause more damage than good to trees. Mature trees don’t need as much water or food as a tree that is a few years old. It’s best to let nature provide the proper nutrients in trees that are more mature.
  • Pressure from cars- If there is a patch of land under the tree that you like to park, it can cause the soil surrounding the tree to become compact. This compacted soil slowly slowly kills trees.
  • Be aware of potential tree diseases- Study the type of tree you have and be aware of the diseases it can catch. Certain trees only catch certain diseases, so knowing what warning signs to look for can save your tree from an untimely death. There are many books that you can purchase that supplies this information.
  • Supply mulch to your tree- Mulch is very beneficial to the health of a tree. It can provide a layer of protection from weeds and excess water. Good practice is to apply a 1 to 4 inch layer of mulch about an inch or two from the base of the tree trunk. This layer should extend around three feet around the tree.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your tree lives a long, healthy life, providing shade and comfort to the surrounding ecosystem.

Why Hire an Arborist

“It’s just a tree, why do I need to spend money on an arborist?” This is a question that a lot of people might be wondering. Providing care for your trees is an investment that can pay substantial returns. Not only do trusted arborists supply necessary care for trees, but they also provide the service of tree removal. They can eliminate branches that might be dangling dangerously close to power lines, roofs, windows, or gutters.

Arborists use methods that ensure the safety of the surrounding area, so that nobody is injured while large branches are being trimmed. It’s important to do research on the arborist before you hire them. Look for people who are certified and licensed and equipped with the proper knowledge and experience to perform the necessary tasks of an arborist.

arborists emergency

Emergency Tree Service

We all know that emergencies strike at the least convenient times, causing frustration and even panic. Most often, this is due to storm damage. When situations like this occur, finding a trusted emergency tree removal service is essential. There are many companies out there that have skilled arborists who are more than equipped to remove limbs that have broken off trees, causing damage to roofs, power lines, etc. Attempting to remove these limbs by yourself can be very dangerous and even deadly; this is why it is of the upmost importance to hire somebody that is highly equipped to remove the danger.

Several factors can cause a tree or other large plant to become hazardous. For instance, after a heavy rainfall, the soil around the roots of a tree can become loose. This can lead to the tree becoming very unstable and possibly tipping over onto a car, house, or power line. Lightening also plays a big factor in trees becoming dangerous. Due to the sap, moisture, and height of branches, trees become a prime object for lightening to strike.

How Much Does it Cost to Hire a Tree Service

Before hiring a tree service, it is important to be aware of how much money you spend on one. The cost depends upon the service being provided, of course.

Out of all the services, the most expensive one is definitely removing an entire tree. Tree removal services cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to upwards of $1,000, depending upon the size of the tree (the smaller, the cheaper). Also, if the tree is located in a hard-to-reach location, the can run the cost up to just under $1,500. Tall trees that extend beyond the grasp of tree removal equipment can spike the cost to well over $1,500.

Another service tree companies provide is pruning and trimming. Pruning a tree has a range of anywhere from $300 to $550. This, again, depends on the size and location of the tree.

If a tree has already fallen or has died, it is much easier for tree services to remove and can range in cost anywhere from $75 to $150.

Do not be deterred by the cost of a tree service company. Usually, the more experience a company has with these services, the more it will cost. These tasks should not be performed by the average homeowner. They can cause a lot of damage and injury if performed incorrectly. We’ve all seen the home videos.

arborist tree inspection

Arborist Tree Inspection

Trees need care in order to maintain their health, just like a human. While trees are very self sufficient, they still require the occasional checkup. In the same way we need doctors, trees need doctor’s visits as well. Arborists are specialists in doing that exact job. Hiring an arborist to do an inspection should be a routine activity, especially in urban locations. Professional arborists will come inspect the tree and give you a a tree health assessment, breaking down of the current state of the tree. They will then recommend what ours of action needs to be taken in order to keep your tree healthy or nurse it back to health.

If you are planning to move into a new home, you will likely hire a home inspector to inspect the house and the current state of the structure. Like a home inspection, it is also important to have the trees inspected. This will let you know if there is any potential risk of a branch falling on the house. Arborists will check the condition of the soil, the root system, and the overall health of the tree.

How to Trim a Tree Without Killing It

Tree trimming is a task that is performed by homeowners all of the time. Sometimes, it is unnecessary to go through the trouble of hiring a tree service when all you need to do is a little trimming. So, how can a person safely trim a tree? I’m glad you asked! Tree trimming is a tedious process and should be handled with much thought and planning. You have to be careful in making sure that you don’t cut off too much or too little. Trees have a natural healing process. When you cut of the branch, trees go through a natural process of “sealing off the wound” to keep out diseases and prevent untimely decay. This wound can be identified by a little bump or donut shaped scars, indicating a normal and healthy healing process.

arborists trim tree branch

3 Steps to Trimming a Tree

Step One –Cut a notch in the bottom of the limb about two to three feet from the trunk of the tree. This notch should be only about 1/4 of the girth of the branch. By making this notch, you help prevent the branch from splitting in the next step.

Step Two – This next cut should be fairly close to notch made in the previous step, away from the tree trunk. This cut should go all the way through, taking away the weight of the branch when you go in for the last cut.

Step Three – This is the most crucial step. This cut should be made right at the point where the limb transitions into the bark of the trunk. This will allow enough room for the wound to heal.

Tree trimming should be taken seriously. This process requires you to take your time and be patient to ensure that all parties remain safe and the tree’s health is maintained. If all of this sounds too overwhelming, you might want to contact an arborist. They have the experience and knowledge to make all the right cuts for your tree without damaging its health.

Environmental and Economical Benefits of Urban Forestry

Urban forestry is a practice that has been around for as long as there have been densely populated cities. As towns in the United States began to grow in both population and wealth, so did the need for public spaces and parks. These places thus incorporated trees for shade and beauty. Parks were a method that urban planners used for acculturation, or assimilation, of urban dwellers and new immigrants. Over time, people began to realize that urban foresting can actually benefit the environment.

As we all know, trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Urban areas have been known to produce way more carbon dioxide than their suburban and rural counterparts. By planting trees and building parks throughout a city, the carbon footprint and air pollution level can be decreased quite significantly. In fact, the more trees a city has, the less cases of asthma there are, according to a 2008 study conducted by Columbia University. A large, mature tree has the ability to supply oxygen for four people daily. Trees in urban areas also have an incredible ability to absorb excess rainwater that might be overwhelming a cities drainage system. The can hold the water and reduce the risk of flooding.

In addition to the environmental benefits urban forestry provides, trees have also had economical benefits on the surrounding community. For instance, in locations with more trees, there is a lower likelihood of crime occurrence. Also, in retail locations where trees and other greenery is present, consumers are willing to spend 12% more on goods.

With all of the benefits of urban forestry will come the need for people to care for these trees. Thankfully, arborists are the tree experts needed to do just that.

How to Plant and Care for a Tree

  1. When planting a tree, it is important to find a good location for it to thrive and for you to reap its benefits. When looking for a prime location to plant your tree, it is important to keep some questions in mind. Look up and look down. Are there any power lines that might cause a problem when it grows? Is there enough room for the roots to spread? Are there any sewer or electrical lines underneath the ground that the roots might intrude? Asking these questions will save a lot of time and money in the future.
  2. Choosing what kind of tree you want is the next step. The amount of care and attention needed depends on the type of tree you get. Be sure to keep this in mind and keep realistic goals in how much effort you want to put into up keeping the tree. A simple internet search will help you determine which tree is best for the amount of shade, upkeep, and size that you desire.
  3. Once you’ve selected your tree, you will need to plant it. But when is the best time to plant a tree? The best time of year is fall, winter, and early spring. Summer is the worst time to plant trees because of  the hot and dry conditions.
  4. After the tree is planted, you’ll need to care for it. Trees benefit greatly from mulch. Be sure to only apply a layer one to four inches thick, leaving a few inches between the base of the tree and the mulch; it should extend about three to four feet around the base of the tree.
  5. New trees also require a lot of water, especially during the months of July and August. It’s good practice to use a soaker hose so that it doesn’t get too much water at once. Newly planted trees need about 10-15 gallons of water per week in the first year. This should be spread out to about five gallons every three or four days. Gradually decrease the amount of water to once every week in the second year and once every other week in the third year. After the fourth and fifth years, trees begin to fend for themselves; only do two or three soakings in the hot and dry months, such as July and August.

Arborists have an incredibly important job to tackle the community. They are essential in caring for the well being of trees. As a beautiful addition to the surrounding environment, it is important that trees are preserved and maintained so that every living being can reap the benefits.
